A Pilot Project for Creating Agro Ecological Model

A PILOT PROJECT FOR CREATING AN AGRO-ECOLOGICAL MODEL IN FOUR VILLAGES OF TEHRI GARHWAL

The Pilot Project aims to establish a training-cum-demonstration initiative focused on climate change mitigation through a community-based agro-ecological model. This model is designed to regenerate the micro-environment and preserve local biodiversity, while also integrating livelihood opportunities in the target villages of Tehri Garhwal. The environmental conditions in this area have been deteriorating due to the over-exploitation of natural resources, excessive deforestation in the past, and changing climatic conditions.

Objectives and Focus Areas:

The project addresses the main environmental problems and their impact on various demographic groups, including women, children, youth, and senior citizens. It emphasizes improving the participation and inclusion of women and youth. The immediate objective is to identify community-oriented, people-centered micro-level solutions for the sustainable regeneration of the ecosystem. This will be achieved by building the capacity of the target groups, equipping them with the necessary knowledge and skills to undertake relevant activities, and establishing training-cum-demonstration units.

Key Activities and Components:

1. Renewable Energy Technology (RET):

• Biogas Plants: Installation and training on the use of biogas plants to provide clean energy and reduce reliance on traditional fuels.

• Rainwater Harvesting: Implementing systems to capture and store rainwater, ensuring water availability during dry periods.

2. Sustainable Agricultural Practices:

• Composting and Vermi-Composting: Training on composting organic waste and using vermi-composting techniques to enhance soil fertility.

• Agro-Forestry, Community Forestry, and Farm Forestry: Promoting the planting of multi-purpose trees and crops that provide food, fuel, fodder, and fruits.

• Pasture Development and Organic Farming: Developing pastures for livestock and promoting organic farming practices to improve soil health and crop yields.

• Milk Production: Encouraging dairy farming as a sustainable livelihood option.

Collaboration and Support:

The project is a joint collaboration involving several organizations:

• Women’s Action For Development (WAFD), New Delhi: A partner organization focused on women’s development.

• Integrated Sustainable Energy and Ecological Development Association (INSEDA), New Delhi: An organization specializing in sustainable energy and ecological development.

• ASDA and Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland: Financial and strategic support to ensure the success of the project.

Through this collaborative effort, the project seeks to create a replicable model for agro-ecological sustainability, contributing to the long-term environmental and economic well-being of the communities in Tehri Garhwal.
